delayed a week this month. There were 22 players in the Open Section
and 20 players in the Reserve. Bob Jacobs, Andy Witte and George Essig
tied for first in the Open with 2½-½ scores.
Zubin Chandran and Tony Turpoff tied for first in the Reserve Section
with 3-0 scores.
This tournament is held every other month at the Brentwood Community Center, 2505 S. Brentwood Blvd., Rm. 103. (From Hwy 40, S. on Brentwood, 1 mile on right). Wayde awards a "Player of the Year" trophy to the person who does best in his tournaments during a calendar year, using a weighted system that takes into account the player's rating. December 10, 1998: Prize winners in the "2nd Thursday of the Month" Quick Chess tournament at the Borders Watson Road Chess Club were: 1st--Jim Voelker and Fred Sadoogi, 3½-½ A/B--Hazim Cekic and Waldo Odak, 3-1 C/D--Arnor Bieltvedt, Derrick Bartotto, Sam Gross, Tom Chryst and Ken Wendling, all 2-2 E/Unrated--Michael Erce, 1-3. December 4-6, 1998: Many Missouri players did well in the National Scholastic K-12 Grade Championship, held in Oak Brook, IL. Some of the top scorers: 2nd Grade: Jack Regenbogen (5-1) placed 4th on tiebreak; unrated James Gossell (4-2). 5th Grade: Thomas Gossell (5-1) placed 13th; Teddy Li (4-2). 6th Grade: David Scott (5-1) placed 6th. 7th Grade: Jared Klein (4-2). 9th Grade: Jordan Dybvig (4-2). 11th Grade: Tommy Rohrbaugh (5-1) placed 6th. November 28 & 29, 1998: 362 players participated in the U.S. Class Championships, held in St. Louis under the direction of Bill Moushey. From the USCF press release: Senior Master (2400 and above): IM Michael Brooks of Raytown, Mo., and Jim Voelker of St. Louis, Mo., each scored 2½ points to tie for first. IM Brooks won the trophy in a special tiebreak game. The Senior Master event was shortened to three round due to the limited number of participants (a total of three players competed in the section). Here's one game from the section: Jim Voelker-Todd Andrews. National Master (2200-2399): Pavel Bereza of Chesterfield, Mo., scored 4 out of a possible 5 points to win first place. A total of nine players competed in the section. Expert (2000-2199): Robert Jacobs, 70, of Lake St. Louis, Mo., and Andre Dokoutchaev, 17, of Joplin, Mo., each scored 4 points to become co-champions. Jacobs took the trophy on tiebreak points. A total of 14 players competed in the section. Class A (1800-1999): Behrooz Vakil of St. Charles, Mo., amassed 4½ points in a field of 27 players to become the new Class A champion. Class B (1600-1799): Darryl Jackson of St. Louis, Mo., completed a 5-0 sweep in a field of 51 players to become the new Class B champion. Class C (1400-1599): Salem Alhalhali, 22, of St. Louis, Mo., Michael Kummer, 18, of St. Louis, Mo., and Andrey Gorlin, 12, of Skokie, Ill., each scored 4½ points to join a three-way tie for first place. Alhalhali won the trophy on tiebreak points. A total of 56 players participated. Class D (1200-1399): Todd Mayfield of St. Peters, Mo., dominated the 53-player section with 5 points. Class E (1000-1199): Adam Chambers, 13, of Normal, Ill., and Glen Scheibel, 17, of Fairview Heights, Ill., each scored 4½ points to become co-champions. Chambers won the trophy on tiebreak points. A total of 52 players competed in the section. Class F and below (999 and below): Jeremy Carter, 16, of Crossville, Tenn., posted a perfect 5-0 score in a field of 71 players to become the new Class F champion. Unrated: David Johnson, of Panama City, Fla., won the 26-player Unrated section with 5 points. November 14, 1998: Bob Jacobs, Arun Sharma and Jim Voelker all went 4-0 at the St. Charles Open. November 12, 1998: Waldo Odak scored 4-0 to win a strong "2nd Thursday of the Month" Quick Chess tournament at the Borders Watson Road Chess Club. Hazim Cekic, Julio Santiago and Jim Voelker tied for second with 3-1 scores, each of them losing to Waldo. Hazim won the A/B prize, Arnor Bieltvedt and Tom Chryst tied for the "C" prize, and Zubin Chandran and Tom Rohrbaugh tied for the D/E prize. The 18 participants included five rated over 2000. September 26 & 27, 1998: At the Missouri Open state chess championship held on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, MO, Jim Voelker, Ron Luther and Bob Holliman all tied for first, Jim getting the state title on tiebreak. Each player had four wins and one draw. Just behind them with four wins and one loss were a group that included St. Louis area players Jim Davies, Waldo Odak and Andy Amelung. September 4-7, 1998: Bob Jacobs took clear second in the North American Open in Oklahoma, giving winner IM John Donaldson his only draw. August 1, 1998: Bob Jacobs and Andy Amelung drew each other and tied for first place in the Open section of the "1st Saturday of Even Months" tournament.
