December 2000: Bill Wright and Ken Bynum had an exhibit of chess sets from around
the world at the St. Louis County Headquarters Library, 1640 Lindbergh
Boulevard (at Clayton Road). The chess exhibit was on
display during the entire month of December.
December 2, 2000: The Open Section of the First Saturday of Even Months Tournament was won by Jim Voelker (2193) with a 3½-½ score. Three players tied for second with 3-1 scores: Bob Jacobs (2100), Panagiotis Massourous (1868), and Thomas Gossell (1579). Tom, who is already on the Top 50 list nationally for 12-year-olds, gained a lot of rating points by beating players rated 1734, 1845 and 2247, while his only loss was to Bob Jacobs. The Class B prize was won by four players scoring 2-2: Atashbek Davlatou, Steven Korenblat, Sid Levin, and Devin Tesar. The Reserve Section was won by Mike Kummer (1596), 4-0. November 10-12, 2000: Kings Island Open (Ohio), Bob Jacobs won $2000 in the Under 2200 section in the Kings Island Open, defeating 5 strong experts to score a perfect 5-0. Two games of Bob's from the tournament. October 14, 2000: Jim Musumeci (1959) won Scary Monster Chess, a G/20 tournament at the Farmington, MO, Public Library, with a perfect 5-0 score. October 7, 2000: The First Saturday of Even Months Tournament was won by Jim Musumeci (2015), Waldo Odak (2009), Steve Bange (1986) and Panagiotis Massouros (1839), all with 2½-½ scores. September 23-24, 2000: The new Missouri Champion is Friedemann Brock, who won the Missouri Open in Rolla with a 4½-½ score. Dr. Brock teaches mathematics at the University of Missouri. He is a native of Germany and has a FIDE rating of 2145. Dr. Brock beat top-rated Ron Luther in the fourth round, and clinched the championship with a last-round draw with Jim Ellis. Five players tied for second with 4-1 scores: Luther and Ellis (who shared the Master Prize), Jim Voelker (who won the Expert Prize), and Waldo Odak and Panagiotis Massouros (who split the Class A Prize). Three players tied for best Class B with 3-2 scores: Milton Garber, Liganage Udaya and Nasyr Ulmasov. Best Class C was Charles Ward with a 3½-1½ score. Best Class D was Craig LaSalle with a 3-2 score, including draws against two Experts. Best Class E was Krista Bills, with a 3½-1½ score. Best Class F was Nick Woodard with a 2-3 score. Top Unrated was Jeremy Knox, 1½-3½. The Biggest Upset Prize went to Brian Dewey (1299) for his first round win over David Cole (2104). The tournament was organized by Yves Tan and directed by Ed Baur. A special event at the tournament was the unveiling of the first inductee to the 1st Annual Missouri Chess Hall of Fame. A handsome plaque was presented to Jim Davies. Jim is a Life Member of the USCF and has been a continuous member of the Missouri Chess Association since 1973. He was a member of the United States Army chess team for two years at the Armed Forces Championship, separated by his one year tour of duty in Vietnam. Jim is an active tournament player and helped found the Missouri Chess Association in 1973. He was the first editor of the Missouri Chess Bulletin, and served the MCA in various offices during the 1970s. He was Director of the St. Louis Chess Foundation, USCF Delegate from Missouri 1973-1975, and USCF Regional Vice President 1978-1980. Jim has been a tournament director, high school chess coach, chess tutor and mentor. Jim is currently and has been for several years the MCA Election Commissioner. Congratulations on an excellent choice as First Inductee! Dave Koehler (1549), Jim Lyon (1270), and Chris Seaman (1207) tied for second with 2½-1½ scores. Dale Medley directed the nine-player event. August 5, 2000: The First Saturday of Even Months Tournament had a different format today. The top-rated player played #2, #3 played #4, etc., so you always played someone close to your own rating. Players who scored 2-0 won $100. They were: Mike Drzakowski, Anne Graham, Russel Hammersmith, Alexey Kazakevich, Sid Levin, Waldo Odak, Vernon Smith, and Ray Song. August 2, 2000: Election Commissioner Jim Davies counted the ballots for the 2000 Missouri Chess Association Board of Directors election at the St. Louis Chess Club. Witnesses were David Cole, Bill Wright and Jim Voelker. Election results July 29, 2000: The "20 Minutes in July" quick chess tournament in Farmington, Missouri, was won by Jim Voelker (2206) and Jim Musumeci (1945), both with 4-1 scores. Steve Randoll (1967) came third with 3½-1½. Nick Knobbe (1109) scored an excellent 3-2, including a draw with Voelker. Crosstable provided by director Dale Medley. Also see the Mineral Area Chess Club page. July 1, 2000: The Collinsville (IL) July Swiss had two sections. In the Open Section there was a 3 way tie for Top Overall, Top Class A and Top Class B. The three players were: Waldo Odak with 2 1/2 David Long with 2 1/2 Clark Guo with 2 1/2 These players split all awarded prizes for the open section. In the Reserve Section: Class C was won by Richard Martin Jr with a perfect 3 points Class D was won by Joseph Boyd with a score of 2 1/2 Under 1200 was won by Brent Hefley with a score of 2 1/2 The unrated prize was won by Robert Cockrell with a score of 2 The upset prize was awarded to Nick Woodard for upseting a player rated 652 points above him. June 3, 2000: The First Saturday of Even Months Tournament was won by Bob Holliman (2122) and Ken Fee, Jr. (1737), both 3-0. Ken's score was a remarkable achievement for a 1700 player, since he beat Jim Davies (2092), Steve Bange (2011) and Waldo Odak (1944). The Reserve Section was won by Mike Zidanic (1393), Nick Knobbe (1337) and John Slattery (1214), all 3-0. Full results are available on director Wayde Stallmann's page. May 12-14, 2000: Thomas Gossell finished 7th at the 2000 NATIONAL ELEMENTARY CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP, held in Grapevine (DFW), Texas, defeating the 27th ranked 11-12 year old in the U.S. in the last round. full results May 1, 2000: The Missouri Chess Association has a new website. Check it out at http://www.tranquility.net/~czar/MoChess/ April 29-30, 2000: The Southeast Missouri Open was won by Jim Ellis (2200) with a 4½-½ score. Waldo Odak (1945) took clear 2nd with 4-1. Young Daniel Drazic (1118) had a very good tournament, tying for the Class D and Under prize. His 2½ points included a win over a 1563 player. April 28-30, 2000: A number of Missouri players participated in the 2000 National High School Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. Click for results. April 29, 2000: The Mike Sarnoff Memorial this year was a free quad tournament held at Parkway North High School and directed by Bill Moushèy. 18 players showed up. Since Jim Voelker (2248) and Alan Erlebacher (2173) were rated over 500 points above the other players it was decided that they would play each other twice and the other 16 players would be divided into four quads. Jim won the first game and they decided to forego the second game and play 5-minute chess instead. The four quads were won by Alex Borodyanskiy (1444) with a 2½-½ score; Mike Drzakowski (1250), the lowest rated player in his quad, also with a 2½-½ score; Andy Reynolds (1240) with a 3-0 score; and Brent Hefley (982) with a 3-0 score. April 22, 2000: The Washington University Spring Open (G/60) was won by Andy Witte and Adil Skuka, both 3½-½. The Under 1800 prize was divided by Wayde Stallmann, Jose Clarin and Mike Kummer, all 2-2. The Under 1600 prize was split by David Scott and Bill Wright, both 2-2. The Reserve (Under 1400) section was won by Chansamone Khotsyphom with a 4-0 score. The Under 1200 prize went to Siyao Gu who scored 3-1. Mark Miller, Andrew Thompson, Patrick Gu and Emily Thompson split the Under 1000 prize with 1-3 scores. The Unrated prize was won by Mike Scheuler with a 3-1 score. Arun Sharma did an excellent job directing. April 1, 2000: The First Saturday of Even Months Tournament was won by Andy Witte (2170), Steve Bange (1988) and Panagiotis Massouros (1820), all 2½-½. Tom Rohrbaugh (1820) had another excellent tournament, beating Jim Davies (2128) and Fred Sadoogi (1993), although he lost to Bange. For more details see Mike Kummer's Site. March 5, 2000: Jefferson City: David Lyons won the Missouri 9th Grade and Under Championship. David Scott (6-0) won the 8th Grade and Under Championship. Thomas Gossell (6-0) won the 6th Grade and Under Championship. Jack Regenbogen (6-0) won the 5th Grade and Under Championship. February 26, 2000: The Missouri High School Championship was won by Matt Brooks of Kansas City and Tom Rohrbaugh of Clayton, both 4-0. Matt won on tiebreaks. Clayton High School won the team prize. February 19-20, 2000: Chicago, U.S. Amateur Team Championship Midwest. The best Missouri team was Team Kurczynski [Tom Rohrbaugh (1786), Mike Kummer (1682), Ray Kurczynski (1573) and Tony Rich (1180)], which scored an impressive 3½-1½. Tony went 4-1, Ray 3½-1½, and the others 3-2. They won the prize for Best Team Under 1600 and, if they hadn't won that prize, would have won the prize for Best Junior Team. The other St. Louis team [Loal Davis (2352), Jim Voelker (2265), Andy Witte (2201) and Scott Dalton (1964)] turned in a disappointing 3-2, although Jim did win the Best 2nd Board Prize with a 5-0 score. February 5, 2000: The First Saturday of Even Months Tournament was won by Andy Witte, Bob Jacobs, Steve Bange and Adil Skuka, all 2½-½. In the Reserve Section, David Scott, Charles Ward and Alexey Kazakevich all scored 3-0.
